Parks and community centers to open late Wednesday

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- All parks and community centers in Hall County, with one exception, will have a delayed opening of 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Laurel Park in Gainesville will be closed all day Wednesday due to a number of fallen trees.

Power outages plagued most of the county Monday night and Tuesday morning, and the lights still have not been turned back on in several areas.

Race this weekend: Hall County Schools Fit Families 5K

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Hall County Schools will hold its third annual Fit Families 5K this weekend.

The race, which includes a fun run option, will be held Saturday, May 3 at Laurel Park in Gainesville. Registration is $20 on race day and includes a T-shirt. Money raised by the event will benefit local schools.

Packet pickup begins at 7:30 a.m. The fun run will be held first, at 9 a.m., while the 5K will be off and running at 9:30 a.m.

State parks still open despite shutdown

ATLANTA -- The government shutdown has closed a number of national parks and historic sites, but Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites will still be open this weekend.

The state parks located on the local Corps of Engineers lakes are open to visitors. They include Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier in Gainesville; Red Top Mountain State Park on Allatoona Lake in Cartersville;and Tugaloo State Park on Lake Hartwell in Lavonia.

"We've already had a number of campers check into our state parks because they had to leave Corps of Engineers campgrounds which had closed," State Parks Assistant Director Wally Woods said in a statement. "We have plenty of cabins, yurts and campsites available this week."

Jimmy Buffett tribute concert to benefit animal shelter

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Tickets are now on sale for the Hawgin' on Lanier Jimmy Buffett tribute concert.

The concert will be held Friday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Laurel Park's amphitheater.

Pirates of the Opry are scheduled to perform. The Gainesville Jaycees will provide a barbecue dinner.

Tickets are $15 each or $300 for a table of eight, which includes food.

Cool Springs Park opening rescheduled

Cool Springs Park opening rescheduled

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- Hall County has rescheduled the opening of its new Cool Springs Park for Monday, Apr. 8 at 5:45 p.m.

The park was originally supposed to open Mar. 23, but the ceremony was canceled because of bad weather.

Probate court now offering weddings

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Hall County Probate Court is now offering wedding ceremonies, just in time for Valentine's Day.

Couples who wish to get married in the court can schedule their weddings while picking up their marriage licenses.

Weddings are offered Thursday afternoons and can be performed in English or Spanish, according to Hall County Probate Court judge Patty Walters Laine.

As Valentine's Day is on a Thursday this year, Laine said her office is prepared to spend the entire day officiating wedding ceremonies.

Hall Couny Probate Court weddings are free. A marriage license costs $56; the price drops to $16 with proof of premarital counseling.

Soccer tournament bringing hundreds to Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Hundreds of people will descend upon Hall County this weekend for a sub-regional soccer tournament.

The event, which is sponsored by the Olympic Development Program (ODP), will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue through Sunday at the Allen Creek Soccer Complex in Gainesville.

"We are fortunate to have a complex like Allen Creek Soccer Complex available for use," Melissa Brooks, Georgia Youth Soccer Women's ODP coordinator, said in a statement. "This is one of the few in Georgia that can accommodate so many teams and games at one location."

Top middle and high school soccer teams from Alabama, Georgia, and North and South Carolina will play 74 games during this weekend's tournament.
