Nobel Prize winner to headline USG conference

ATLANTA -- Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be the keynote speaker at an economic development conference hosted by the University System of Georgia.

The Social Business and Microcredit conference will be held Oct. 17 at Georgia Tech's Ferst Center.

Yunus won the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneering work in microcredit, which is the extension of very small loans to those in poverty, with the goal of spurring entrepreneurship.

Leidich’s son was twenty-years-old when he was suddenly killed in a motor vehicle accident.

Benefit Event for Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy

Lanier Partners of North Georgia, Inc., a Georgia non-profit organization, in association with a local donor, will hold a raffle drawing on September 11th to benefit Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy and his family.

The prize is an Official NASCAR Hood from Turner Motorsports belonging to the #38 Great Clips car. Raffle tickets may be purchased online at http://www.lanierpartners.org or in person at The Tilted Kilt Restaurants. The raffle tickets will only be $20.00 each and you can buy as many as you like.

The proceeds of the raffle will benefit a Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy who has demonstrated not only excellence in the field and in serving Hall County, but whose family has faced one of life’s greatest challenges.

Sheriff’s Deputy Joey Haban and his wife Kristina were expecting the birth of their daughter to be a joyous occasion. The difference is that she was born at only 24 weeks and weighed a mere 15 ounces.

Radio host Zoller to run for new congressional seat

ATLANTA (AP) - A conservative radio show host from Gainesville has filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission to run for Georgia's new congressional seat.

Martha Zoller said, through a spokesman Wednesday, she will remain on the air until next spring when she qualifies as a candidate with Georgia officials.

Zoller hosts a daily talk radio show on WXKT-FM, owned by Cox Radio, and is syndicated across Georgia.

Ryan Mahoney, a spokesman for Zoller, said she was told by Cox lawyers she may continue to broadcast until she qualifies to run.

A spokeswoman for Cox did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Republican state Rep. Doug Collins, also of Gainesville, has also said he will run for the new seat in northeast Georgia.

7 named to Deal's immigration review board

ATLANTA -- Seven people have been appointed to a newly created board to look into complaints about state and local officials failing to comply with state laws related to immigration.

The Immigration Enforcement Review Board was created by the state's tough new law targeting illegal immigration.

Appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal are Americans for Immigration Control spokesman Phil Kent, former Fulton County GOP chairman Shawn Hanley and lawyer Ben Vinson. Appointed by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle are Dallas Mayor Boyd Austin and Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager. Appointed by House Speaker David Ralston are lawyer Robert Mumford and Colquitt County Commissioner Terry Clark.

The board will have the power to investigate complaints, hold hearings, subpoena documents and witnesses, and take disciplinary action.

GAINESVILLE: GOP lawmaker with Deal ties running for Congress

ATLANTA -- A Republican state lawmaker with ties to Gov. Nathan Deal says he will run for Georgia's newest congressional seat.

RELATED: Lawmakers unveil new congressional map

State Rep. Doug Collins, of Gainesville, is serving his third term in the state House and served as one of the governor's floor leaders, sponsoring Deal's proposal to revamp the HOPE scholarship.

His current House district includes portions of Hall, Lumpkin, and White counties.

Collins served a combat tour in Iraq. A former small business owner, he now practices law in Gainesville.

Conservative radio show host Martha Zoller has also said she will seek the seat in northeast Georgia.
