HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- A rabid raccoon was recently captured in northern Hall County.

The raccoon made contact with a dog in the Cool Springs Road area. Animal control officials caught the raccoon and shipped it to the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur, where it tested positive for rabies.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the raccoon was found. It is Hall County's third confirmed case of rabies this year.

Pet owners, especially ones who live near Cool Springs Road, are encouraged to vaccinate their animals for rabies. The Hall County Animal Shelter offers $10 vaccines Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1688 Barber Road in Gainesville.
