As Students End School Year, Boys & Girls Clubs Offers Way to Fight “Summer Brain Drain"

ATLANTA -- This month, millions of kids begin their summer breaks, looking forward to vacations, pool time and carefree days. But studies and experience show a lack of mental stimulation causes them to unlearn much of what they were taught over the school year.  Boys & Girls Clubs across the country offer young people a safe, exciting place to spend their summer months, with staff and resources to fight the effects of this “Summer Brain Drain.”

The reality for today’s kids is that many will find themselves with few structured activities, caregivers who are working all day, and too much unsupervised television, video game and computer time.

President Touts Concerns Over Summer Learning

Also known as “summer learning loss” or the “summer slide,” this issue is a growing problem for American children.  In 2010, President Obama noted, “Students are losing a lot of what they learn during the school year during the summer.”

Community Foods - $1.79/lb Chicken On Sale Now

Community Foods - $1.79/lb Chicken On Sale Now
Have you heard of Community Foods?

Last month I placed my first order through Community Foods.  It’s actually based in Cumming, GA but they offer deliveries throughout Metro Atlanta.  The overall concept is that they sell 3 products – Chicken (hormone free, no steroids, etc.), Ground Beef (all natural, no hormones, etc.) and Tilapia.  Now my ideal Tilapia would be wild-caught, this tilapia is farm-raised.  But it’s really “pretty” (ha!  that always sounds so funny to say about food).

Right, now chicken just became available for delivery.  Click here to learn more about Community Foods and their $1.79/lb chicken.

2012-2013 Pre-School & MMO Registration

January typically kicks off the Registration season for local Mother’s Morning Out and Pre-School programs. Daycare programs are typically easier to find, but some times church-based MMO & Pre-School Programs are a little harder.

The Registration process will vary from program to program. So will the structure, days, times, and activities offered. Below is a listing of current programs offered throughout the city.

Even if information for the 2012-2013 school year hasn’t been released, chances are if you call now you can at least get some updated information so you’ll be prepared.
