Positive rabies alert in Hall County

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Hall County Animal Control has announced that a rabid raccoon made contact with two dogs in the Lanier Boulevard area of southern Hall County earlier this week.

On May 6, officials with the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur confirmed that the raccoon had rabies. This is the seventh official rabies case of 2011.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located.

Hall County residents are advised to call Animal Control at 770-531-6830 if they see an animal acting strangely.

Pet owners are also encouraged to vaccinate their cats and dogs for rabies. Vaccines are available for $10 at the Hall County Animal Shelter (1688 Barber Road, Gainesville, 30507) Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
