Drug drop box installed at police headquarters

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- The Gainesville Police Department has installed a permanent secure drop box for prescription drugs at its headquarters.

Residents are welcome to turn in their unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the box year-round. All dropoffs are free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Members of the police staff will collect the drugs in the box and dispose of them in safe and legal ways.

"This effort will reduce the prescription drugs that are readily available to our children," Gainesville Police Chief Brian Kelly said in a statement. "It's crucial that unused, unwanted and expired drugs lurking in people's medicine cabinets do not end up in the wrong hands."

The public is welcome to use the drop box during regular business hours -- 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Gainesville Police headquarters is located at 701 Queen City Parkway.
