Bert's Big Adventure Leaves For Disney World

Bert's Big Adventure Leaves For Disney World

Atlanta, GA--  (submitted by Tara Murphy) On Thursday, February 17, 2011, the Bert’s Big Adventure families, friends and supporters will gather at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel Atlanta Airport to kick-off an unforgettable VIP send-off party.

Mardi Gras themed, the 2011 send-off will include face-painting and mask-decorating, magicians, Disney characters and more! For the adults, hair, make-up and mini-massages are just the beginning. In addition, Bert’s Big Adventure will be having surprise reveals each hour for select families. Past reveals have included a fully-loaded handicapped accessible minivan for a single-mother and a dream wedding of a lifetime for a couple who had spent their life-savings on medical bills.

This year, who knows what fun, laughter, excitement and tears of joy will take place at this incredible send-off.

Hundreds of applications came pouring in and the final selections have been made. After careful consideration and much deliberation, the Bert’s Big Adventure staff and medical team have chosen 13 children from 12 families across metro Atlanta to go on the trip of a lifetime this February. The group will depart from the Sheraton Gateway Hotel Atlanta Airport on Thursday, February 17, 2011 and will spend the next five days on a trip that can only be described as wonderfully magical.

“It’s our job to make sure that this is an experience these families will never forget,” says Bert Weiss. “When you have a child with special needs your life is consumed by medical bills, appointments and the illness. There’s very little time for pure fun. That’s what Bert’s Big Adventure is for – to provide both the children and their families with an experience free of stress or worry.

Be Aware: New State Tax Law Went into effect Jan. 1

Be Aware: New State Tax Law Went into effect Jan. 1

Hall County, GA--  (submitted by Hall County)

Under Georgia tax law applied in Jan. 2010, property owners may apply for a tax exemption year round (except for the Conservation Use exemption), but only exemptions filed by April 1 will apply to the current year tax statement. There are more new changes effective Jan. 1, 2011 as a result of S.B. 346.

• Property owners have 45 days to file an assessment appeal rather than 30 days.

• Property purchased in 2010 for less value than the county assessment of record will be taxed for 2011 at that lower value; but if the purchase price is higher, the county cannot raise the taxable value. So if you bought a $400,000 house in foreclosure for only $150,000, the county can only tax you for $150,000.

• The county is required to send every taxpayer an assessment notice each year, whether there has been a change in the value or not. The notices go out at the beginning of the summer.
