4 arrested in taxi driver murder in Hall County

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Four people have been arrested in connection with a taxi driver's murder in Hall County.

According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, deputies received a call of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Barrett Road and Dorsey Peek Road early Monday. Deputies found a white Taxi El Palmar in a wooded area. Inside, they found 46-year-old Isasias Tovar-Murrillo, of Gainesville, dead.

Investigators say tips led them to the arrests of 39-year-old Misty Moran, 28-year-old Margarita Leanos, 24-year-old Nicholas Gonzalez and 22-year-old Justin Adams.

Police say that Moran shot and killed Tovar-Murillo during an attempted robbery. The other three suspects followed the taxi as the attempted robbery took place, and then picked up Moran after the robbery, police said.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A Gainesville father and son will spend time in prison after being convicted of stealing millions of dollars from an elderly Cobb County woman.

Jeffrey Carr and his father Joseph were each sentenced to 40 years for violating Georgia's RICO Act. Joseph must serve two years in custody, and Jeffrey is required to serve 10.

The pair stole a substantial amount of money from 93-year-old Frances Perkins. Perkins and her late husband owned land in east Cobb County, including 33 acres on Johnson Ferry Road just south of Lower Roswell Road.

According to information presented in court, Jeffrey Carr, 41, became friendly with Perkins's daughter Linda in 2009. Over time, Linda gave Jeffrey Carr half a million dollars.

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- Hall County residents are asked to be wary of a person pretending to collect money for the county's fire department.

The scammer has called or visited a number of homes and businesses, asking for donations to Hall County Fire Services. Whenever residents question the collection, the scammer becomes rude and aggressive, according to Hall County Interim Deputy Fire Chief Chad Black.

Black added that the fire department only solicits funds during its annual Boot Drive for the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation.

"We are disturbed that someone would misrepresent us in this way, and we urge all citizens to be wary of this person or persons," Black said in a statement.

Anyone who may have been visited by the possible scammer is urged to call the Hall County Sheriff's Office at 770-536-8812.

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. -- More details have been released about the man accused of shooting the Habersham County sheriff and a deputy over the weekend.

In a Monday afternoon news conference, GBI Deputy of Investigations Rusty Andrews gave a timeline of what happened Sunday.

Sheriff Joey Terrell, Deputy William Zigan and another deputy responded to a domestic call in Clarkesville at around 7:30 p.m. The suspect's 16-year-old daughter called police from a nearby store. She told 911 operators that she escaped from the home.

As the sheriff officials drove to the residence, they saw a Ford Crown Victoria approaching them. The Crown Victoria turned into a yard and spun out. A man, believed to be former sheriff's office employee Anthony Giaquinta, got out of the vehicle.

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- A North Hall High School senior was arrested for writing a bomb threat on a bathroom wall.

Emilio Junior Avalos, 18, faces a charge of making terroristic threats.

The bomb threat was discovered Tuesday afternoon, and the building was evacuated. According to Gordon Higgins of Hall County Schools, students and staff were taken to the school stadium.

Police conducted a sweep of the school campus, but nothing was found.

Parents were notified that they could pick their children up at the upper parking lot off of Mt. Vernon Road, Higgins said.

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- A Hall County deputy sheriff has been charged with accepting bribes and conspiring to distribute marijuana.

David Treadwell, 33, of Gainesville was indicted Jan. 28 by a federal grand jury.

He is accused of accepting money from a person he believed was a drug dealer, and also agreeing to alert the person if he learned the dealer was under investigation.

Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Horn said Treadwell accepted $200 or $300 from the drug dealer on five occasions in late 2014.

"I will not tolerate this kind of criminal action," Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said in a statement. "I am thankful for the duty-bound officers who brought these heinous activities to the forefront."

Treadwell's case is being investigated by the FBI and the North Georgia Major Offenders Task Force, which includes members of the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Suspect, victim identified in Gainesville hotel murder

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- A former missing person has now become a suspect in a Gainesville hotel murder.

The crime happened Saturday at Sun Suites in the 1100 block of SW Jesse Jewell Parkway. According to the Gainesville Police Department, 52-year-old Harmon Lavender of Augusta died from multiple stab wounds. A hotel employee found the body inside a second floor room. The investigation was turned over to the GBI.
