Daniel Alvarez Memorial Fund Established in honor of Mr. Alvarez whose Family of 5 was killed 9/30

Atlanta, GA--  Nearly the entire nation mourned the loss of Daniel Alvarez, his wife and children, as Daniel and his family became a symbol of Tropical Storm Nicole’s devastation last month.

Daniel was returning home on the last day, that great day of the Feast of Tabernacles, with his wife, three year old twin sons and one year old daughter in what the Associated Press (AP) termed, “Nightmare” of rain, when his vehicle “hydroplaned, left the roadway, overturned and landed in a ditch filled with water near Creswell, North Carolina.” per the N.C. Highway Patrol, drowning him and his family.

Firefighters to recognize Breast Cancer

From October 1st-9th, Gainesville and Hall County Firefighters will be wearing pink T-shirts to in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The two fire departments together sold almost 1,000 shirts, netting $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation.

Hear Music Live and Watch Dogs Dive at the Lake Lanier Pet Fest

Atlanta, GA--  Don’t miss the first Lake Lanier Pet Fest, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sept. 25 and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at Laurel Park in Gainesville. This family and pet-friendly event is expected to draw thousands from Atlanta, Athens, Gainesville and the North Georgia Mountains to see the nationally-sanctioned Dixie Dock Dogs diving competition. 

Register Early for Hands On Atlanta Day and Win a Chance to Work with Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta, GA--  Registration for 20th Annual Hands On Atlanta Day, one of the largest single-day volunteer efforts in the country, is now open to individuals, families and groups. As many as 10,000 volunteers will participate in service projects throughout metro-Atlanta, renovating public schools, taking part in environmental projects, making much needed repairs to seniors’ homes, and much more. This year’s Hands On Atlanta Day is presented by GE.

Registration is $5 for adults and is free for youths under 18 years of age.  Event proceeds support Hands On Atlanta’s volunteer programs.

Registrants who sign up by September 17 and are at least 18 years old will be entered in a drawing from which 25 lucky participants will be randomly selected to participate in an additional service day with the Atlanta Falcons this spring.

In addition, two of the winning 25 will each receive two round-trip, coach tickets to anywhere AirTran flies.
