Registration for the 7th Annual Spring Chicken Festival Cook-off is April 20th

Gainesville, GA --  More than two dozen cook teams have registered for the 7th Annual Spring Chicken Festival Chicken Cook-Off in downtown Gainesville Saturday, April 30 from 10am – 4pm. The cook off consists of two divisions: Professional and Backyard Bar-B-Q. Prizes will be awarded in both categories. The Grand Champion will receive $500 and proudly possess the coveted Chicken City Cup for one year.

April 20 is the registration deadline for the inaugural Chicken City Parade. The parade will include floats, vintage cars, and is sure to have some interesting chicken decorations.  Participants are encouraged to incorporate recycling when possible. The parade route will include the Gainesville Square. Cook off rules and guidelines as well as the parade registration form are available at www.keephallbeautiful.org.

Down Payment Assistance available to Hall County residents

Hall County, GA --  (submitted by Hall County)  Hall County residents purchasing their first home can now apply locally for down payment assistance. Low to moderate income homebuyers will be awarded $2,500-$5,000 toward a down payment or closing costs. About 60 grants will be awarded to first-time homebuyers or displaced homemakers.

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs funnels federal grant funding to counties through the Community Home Investment Program. The local grant administrator, Home Development Resources Inc. (HDRI), started accepting applications this week for the funds.

Now it’s easier to find TV18 online

Hall County, GA--  (submitted by Nikki Young)  TV18, the Gainesville-Hall County Government channel, has a new web address, www.tv18online.org, that makes it easier for the public to find TV18 videos and information online. The new URL directs viewers to TV18’s page on the City of Gainesville website, www.gainesville.org. The page includes videos of all TV18 productions, a new programming schedule and bulletin board information.

Red Oak Sanitation customers entitled to refund for services

ATLANTA – Gwinnett residents and former customers of Red Oak Sanitation may, soon, be entitled to a refund; which will be paid as part of an agreement reached by the company and the Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP).

Also, according to the agreement, “Red Oak Sanitation was no longer authorized to provide waste collection services to residents of unincorporated Gwinnett County with the implementation of the countywide solid waste program in July 2010”.

Children can play and learn about the environment

Earth Day is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for a way to involve the kids, there is no better way than with the Earth Day Kids Fest at Chattahoochee Nature Center on April 16 from 10-3.

This is the 9th Annual Earth Day Kids Fest and is sponsored by Captain Planet Foundation and Chattahoochee Nature Center, in addition to being presented by Macy’s Foundation.    As the name would imply, the Earth Day festival is just for the kids.  It’s an event where there is lots of learning, but lots of fun too.
