WEEKEND EVENTS: 5K's, Car Shows and Garden Tours

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.  – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

The Gwinnett Braves will host a 5K Family Fun run at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. The run will begin at 8:00 a.m. and is followed by a one mile family fun run that starts ten minutes later. This run will benefit the American Cancer Society and will cost $30. Participants will, also, get a free ticket to the Saturday matchup against the Toledo Mud Hens.

Norcross Police are inviting you to take part in a 5k run that begins at 8:00 a.m. The run will be called "Cops Helping Unique Kids" or CHUK. The $20 registration fee will go to the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation. There is also a free run and walk that will happen at 10:00 a.m. and a family festival at Thrashers Park.

With an economy like ours, it’s imperative that people look for a bargain wherever they can and public pools offer fun with that’s easy on the pockets. Check out these local pools and enjoy a classic, cost-effective, exciting summertime experience.

Gwinnett County

Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation offer state-of-the-art aqua centers and leisure pools. General admission for these pools is $4 for Gwinnett resident and $8 for non-Gwinnett residents.

It's almost pool party time. We've got new bikinis and can't wait to break them in. But before most public pools "officially" open Memorial Day weekend we decided to give a refresher in pool/beach etiquette. ‘Tragically , not everyone was born knowing how to act at the pool or beach.  Unfortunately, there are some people who really need to be told not to poo, pee, spit, or blow their nose in a pool. For those of you who know better bear with us, and for those of you who don't, read on!

WEEKEND EVENTS: National Public Gardens Day, kiln opening and Spring Fling

ATHENS, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

To commemorate National Public Gardens Day, sponsored by the Rain Bird and American Public Gardens Association, nationwide gardens are offering free admission with a coupon printout, which can be found here. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, located in Athens, is accepting these coupons. The Garden is located about three miles south of the University. The address is 2450 South Milledge Avenue in Athens.

Visit Vines Garden in Loganville on Sunday May 7 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for National Train Day at Vines Garden. This event is being presented by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation. Engineers will be on hand holding information sessions on trains at the largest railroad in the Southeast.

LOCAL PROFILE: Fort Yargo State Park

WINDER, Ga. – Go outside and be a kid, again, at the Fort Yargo State Park. The park, which is located between the capitol city and the land-o-Bulldogs, is a popular among city dwellers who want to a getaway.  

This park was built for the outdoor enthusiast. Visitors can take advantage of the parks eighteen mile biking and hiking trails, the 260-acre lake and wooded disc golf course. The lake offers swimming, kayaking, fishing and boating; so there’s something for everyone.

The park also has a campground and three cottages that rent for $130, each. Those who wish to rent a boat may do so for a minimal fee and others can play miniature and dish golf for $4 and under. The facility also is home to two tennis courts.

Upcoming Events: On May 7, the park will host the Dirty Spokes Mountain Bike Race from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Mia’s Pizza and Eats of Cumming, will host a gallery display of artwork published in the NFHS 2011 literary magazine. Artwork published in the magazine will be available for purchase. All funds will go to support the production of North’s nationally recognized
literary magazine.

This is the second year Mia’s will host the North Forsyth High School Literary Magazine Release Party and Fundraiser.

Minx is a favorite among locals and university students. The shop, which features florescent lights and an adorable resident Corgi named Winston, has an impressive collection of vintage jewelry, boots, shows, coats and furniture. However, shoppers think the best part of the shop is the $1 section in the back and the $5 bin. This is the type of thrift store that makes thrifters happy. The store is located at 166 W. Clayton Street in Athens.
