GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Poultry processor KD Acquisition I LLC was fined $187,100 for 11 safety violations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA's Atlanta-East Area office received a call in September about safety hazards at the company's Gainesville plant.

Two of the complaints were for repeat violations, including allowing untrained workers to operate the plant's conveyor belt system. KD Acquisition was fined for a similar violation at its Braselton plant in 2007.

Eight more violations involved improperly training employees to handle hazardous materials, exposing workers to electrical hazards due to damaged wiring, and fall hazards brought about by an unprotected roof ledge.

The final violation, which did not carry a financial penalty, was issued for failure to post adequate signs on permited-required spaces.

"KD Acquisitions has a history of endangering its workers by exposing them to serious safety and health hazards that must be corrected before a worker is seriously injured," William Fulcher, director of OSHA's Atlanta-East Area office, said in a statement. The Braselton plant was fined $142,150 for eight more violations in January.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations to pay the fines, request a conference with OSHA or dispute the penalties.
