Ga. Shakespeare partners with 3 universities

Ga. Shakespeare partners with 3 universities

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- Georgia Shakespeare, the Oglethorpe University-based theater group, recently announced a partnership with three other north Georgia schools.

The new alliance includes Kennesaw State University and the two schools that make up the Gainesville Theatre Alliance -- Brenau University and the University of North Georgia.

"In 2012, we took a hard look at our operating model and decided that, in order to become truly sustainable, we needed to capitalize on our unique strengths," Georgia Shakespeare managing director Lauren Morris said in a statement.

Georgia Shakespeare will use the new partnership to play up those strengths, including bringing classic stories to life in a modern, relatable way. The newly added universities will also help the company increase ticket sales and sponsorship opportunities, and allow budding performers at the schools to explore the inner workings of a professional theater company.

Groundbreaking set for Smithgall Woodland Garden

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held April 17 for the initial phase of the new Smithgall Woodland Garden in Gainesville.

The 168-acre public garden is being developed by the Atlanta Botanical Garden as an extension of the Midtown attraction on land off Cleveland Highway that was donated in 2002 by Gainesville resident Lessie Smithgall and her late husband Charles Smithgall. When fully developed, Smithgall Woodland Garden will allow the Atlanta Botanical Garden to broaden its conservation efforts while providing visitors access to beautiful green space and cultural amenities.

“Smithgall Woodland Garden will enable us to evolve to the next level, reaching people across the state and expanding our vital plant conservation programs,” said Mary Pat Matheson, president and CEO of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Gainesville Symphony Orchestra to shut down

Gainesville Symphony Orchestra to shut down

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- The Gainesville Symphony Orchestra is shutting down after more than 30 years of operation.

Vanessa Hyatt, vice president of the symphony, says every effort was made to keep the symphony going, but there was not enough public support to save it.

Symphony leaders blame the demise on a bleak economy and an overall lack of public support.

Hyatt said the decision to quit operations had been prolonged since about five years ago, when the symphony's board first saw a dramatic drop in donations. She said it seemed as if donations were cut in half.

The Gainesville Symphony Orchestra began as the Lanier Symphony Orchestra in 1982. It held its performances at Brenau University in recent years.

ATLANTA -- Twenty-three years ago, this month, Atlanta was the focus of the Academy Awards when "Driving Miss Daisy" won "Best Picture.

The film was written by Pulitzer prize winning Atlanta playwright Alfred Uhry who grew up in the Druid Hills area.

The story deals with the relationship between an elderly Jewish woman and her African-American chauffeur after World War II.

And as of today, the home from the movie, which forever linked Atlanta to Hollywood is, now, up for sale and it's going to the highest bidder.

To some, the home is as defining as Jessica Tandy & Morgan Freeman and as unforgettable as Alfred Uhry's words.

It's located at 922 Lullwater Road in the Druid Hills neighborhood.

Jeff Hullinger asked, the listing agent for Coldwell Banker Doris Robinson, "How did this home get selected for the movie?"

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- "I've done everything from sales to marketing, accounting," said Emily Griffith. But one day nine years ago, long after most people have chosen their life's path, Griffith found a new one.

"I was early in my 40's, and I had no idea I knew how to paint," she said.

Turns out Griffith was a natural, and even though she calls a first painting of her dog primitive, it's still better than most people could ever do.

"The more you paint, the more your eye gets trained," she said humbly.

Almost 1,000 paintings later, Griffith is a renowned painter -- of pets.

"That's what I'm known for is capturing the dog's personality," she said.

Especially when that dog is the dawg -- Ugga. Griffith has painted Uggas 7, 8 and 9.

She also painted actress Tori Spelling's dog, who died.

And she's painted hundreds of not so famous pets, no less adored by their owners.
