Hero Central: Gainesville Mom Helps Moms in Need

GAINESVILLE, GA -- In Gainesville, one woman has become an unstoppable force, leading the way to create an educational center and shelter for homeless young mothers.

Shannon Imes has led her experiences of the past drive her energy of the present.

"[It was] a life of selling drugs, a life of dancing ...just a thug life," Imes recalls.

It was also, Imes says, a life of abuse and molestation. It left her a young, single mother of five.

NE Georgia Medical Center to be able to Offer Clinical Pastorial Training

Atlanta, GA--  Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) has recently been granted Provisional Candidacy Accreditation as an Institutional Sponsored Center with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).  NGMC has offered Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) since 2000 and has served as a clinical placement site for students under the accreditation of another institution prior to its recent accreditation.

NGMC will now be able to offer clinical training to area clergy under its own accreditation.  “We are very proud to have received this accreditation,” says Jeff Thompson, chaplain and director of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at NGMC.  “NGMC is currently the only hospital in the North Georgia area and only the second hospital in Georgia, outside the Atlanta area, accredited to offer CPE.”

Field of Dreams Baseball Begins Today

Hall County Parks and Leisure Services’ Field of Dreams fall baseball season officially beings today.  Chopper, the Gwinnett Braves mascot, will be on site this Tuesday to surprise the children participating in the league.  Stop by for a chance to snap a picture with one of the area’s favorite mascots.

Participants will meet at the field on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., for the next six weeks. Registration is required, although, there is no fee to participate. 

Located in Alberta Banks Park, the “Field of Dreams” is a place where every child can play! Complete with a rubberized, accessible baseball field and playground, this sports complex even meets the needs of children with physical and developmental disabilities.

Field of Dreams is open to all school aged children and participants do not have to reside in Hall County.

Hear Music Live and Watch Dogs Dive at the Lake Lanier Pet Fest

Atlanta, GA--  Don’t miss the first Lake Lanier Pet Fest, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sept. 25 and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at Laurel Park in Gainesville. This family and pet-friendly event is expected to draw thousands from Atlanta, Athens, Gainesville and the North Georgia Mountains to see the nationally-sanctioned Dixie Dock Dogs diving competition. 

Statewide Early Voting Starts Today

ATLANTA (AP) - Think you might not be able to make it to the polls on election day? Get your vote in early.

Early voting for the Nov. 2 general election began Friday in some Georgia counties and will be open all over the state Monday.

There are early voting locations all over the state. Voters can check the secretary of state's office website for early voting locations and hours.

Be sure to bring one of the six accepted forms of photo ID. They are: a valid state or federal government-issued photo ID; a Georgia driver's license, even if it's expired; a valid employee photo ID from any local, state or federal government; a valid U.S. passport; a valid U.S. military photo ID; valid tribal photo ID.
